Why Rest is Essential for new Mothers

In the first few weeks of motherhood, one thing tends to disappear faster than anything else: rest. Almost every new mother I meet says the same thing — "I just want to sleep."
Rest isn't a luxury. It's part of your recovery.

Your body is still healing
Birth is one of the biggest things your body will ever go through. Hormones are rebalancing, tissues are repairing, and if you're breastfeeding, you're producing around 750ml of milk a day. All of that needs sleep to happen properly.
Why it matters
Weeks of broken sleep can lead to:
A higher risk of postnatal depression and anxiety
Lower milk supply
Slower physical recovery
Feeling disconnected from your baby
None of this means you're doing anything wrong. It means your body is asking for what it needs.
Simple ways to protect your rest
Say yes to help. Meals, laundry, holding the baby while you nap.
Lower the bar. A tidy house is not a measure of motherhood.
Limit visitors in the first two weeks.
Protect one stretch of sleep. Even four uninterrupted hours changes everything.
How a maternity nurse helps
At night, I take over the feeds, settling, and nappy changes so you can actually sleep. For breastfeeding mums, I bring the baby to you and handle the rest. Most mothers feel like themselves again within just a few nights.
You don't have to do this alone. If you'd like overnight support in your first weeks at home, get in touch.
